In Flanders Fields

A new voice has been given to John McCrae’s words with a modern interpretation connecting 1918 to 2018.

John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields” has resonated for generations. For the 100th year of Armistice, a new voice has been given to his words with a modern interpretation connecting 1918 to 2018.

The story combines the use of animated First World War still images with live footage. In essence, we see actions of the soldiers carrying a wounded soldier or fixing an ambulance engine, scaling a trench to go over the edge. New film was captured matching people to the same actions. Through the soldier’s sacrifice, we complete their movements and carry on, what they were unable to complete in their lives, 100 years ago. We carry the torch for them as we move through our daily lives with the simple actions of friendship, giving, love. 

The Vimy Foundation has generously granted use of colourized WW1 images. These unique, artistically treated stills were animated through parallax animation to help them come to life. Scenes and locations were then matched to each WW1 image, aligning them to follow one another in sequence making the connection from 1918 to 2018.
