My maternal grandfather, William V. McCafferty

My maternal grandfather, William V. McCafferty, served over-seas in England and France during WW1 as a Sapper with the Canadian Engineers (CEF), 24th R,D. According to his Attestation Paper his occupation was listed as Teamster when he enlisted in New Brunswick on March 1, 1917. His age then is shown as 21, but the story goes he lied about his age in order to enlist as he wasn’t old enough at the time. The medical records indicate that he had several injuries, including a gunshot wound to his hand and forearm. When he returned home, the family felt he was never the same after seeing the horrors of that War, but he didn’t speak of what he saw in the war years. He died in 1969 in Newcastle, NB at the age of 73 and is buried in St. Mary’s Church Cemetery there. To his grandchildren he was fondly known as Pop.
