My great-grandfather, Charles Herbert Dougan

by Shella Scheller

My great-grandfather, Charles Herbert Dougan was just 19 years old when he enlisted in May of 1916, and one year later at age 20 was at Vimy Ridge with the 44th Battalion. He was gravely injured, having been shot in the right shoulder and the face, it was an arduous recovery and he spent several years in hospital. Though missing part of his jaw and suffering other effects of his injuries incurred at Vimy Ridge, he lived until age 70.
