Curiosity Tour Previews @ Jane’s Walk

This summer, ECAMP will be offering weekly Curiosity Tours: one exploring labour history downtown, the other getting a sense of Ukrainian ties in McCauley and Central McDougall. Join us for free previews of both tours during the Jane’s Walk YEG festival.

Working Downtown

  • Saturday, May 3, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
  • Distance: 2.5 – 3 kilometers
  • Accessibility: Sidewalks with street crossings, mostly level terrain
  • Meeting Point: Royal Alberta Museum entrance

Discover the working-class stories that built Edmonton through this downtown walking tour. You’ll explore:

  • Indigenous labor history and the pemmican industry
  • Women workers at the Great Western Garment factory
  • Immigrant contributions to city infrastructure
  • Key strikes and protests, including the amusing 1947 Chocolate Bar Strike

Interactive elements include scent experiences, creating protest signs, and participating in historical timelines.

Ukrainian History in McCauley

  • Saturday, May 3, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
  • Distance: 2.5 – 3 kilometers
  • Accessibility: Sidewalks with street crossings, mostly level terrain
  • Meeting Point: Gazebo behind St. John’s Cultural Centre

This tour explores Ukrainian immigration to the McCauley and Central McDougall neighbourhoods from the early 20th century to today. At each stop, you’ll engage your senses—hearing the music of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, taking in ceremonial scents at St. Josaphat Cathedral, and tasting traditional pastries.

Highlights include Ukrainian churches and community spaces that showcase the enduring Ukrainian presence in our city.
