Bird was literate. He attended school at York Factor on the shores of Hudson\u2019s Bay, and several of his letters to people such as John Edward Harriott (to whom he wrote a harrowing account of surviving an attack by a \u201cwar party\u201d) have survived. By the time he submitted this scrip application in the 1880s, however, Bird was blind and had to sign the document with an X.
